Abstract

——————————————————-

This project is the continuity of an European project (RAMP 2001) on potential neurotoxic effect of radio frequencies on rat. Behavioral consequences will be completed, evaluating effects of chronic exposure to radio frequencies on memorization and attention. Morphological and functional analysis will be performed to complete results.

Summary

——————————————————-

1) Introduction

In the RAMP 2001 European project, potential neurotoxic effects of GSM radio frequencies exposure were studied on rat. This study was compound of anatomical, functional and behavioral data. It shows no clear neurotoxic effect, but some results have to be completed. Particularly, we found functional modifications and unusual data during a learning and memory task.

In this project, animals will be chronically exposed to GSM radio frequencies, and will be then tested in behavioral tasks. At the end of exposure, anatomical and functional analysis will be performed.

This project allows to complete previous studies of our staff and, extrapolating, to reject a potential sanitary risk for mobile phones users.

2) State of the art

Actually, no clear effect on the central nervous system was described after an exposure to radio frequencies. But some results have to be reproduced or completed, in particular with long exposure and at low doses.

The project will apply that kind of exposure (long time duration: 6 months, low doses: environmental values). New behavioral protocols will be used and previous results of RAMP 2001 project will be completed.

3) Scientific methodology

A head only exposure set-up will be used to reproduce the users exposure. Animals will be pass in behavioral task just after exposure, every days during 6 month. At the end of exposure, behavioral results will be compared to morphological and functional data.

4) Skills

INERIS institute has to study and prevent environmental accidental and chronic risks for people and ecosystems.

The experimental toxicology unit, and the neurotoxicology group in particular, had proved its appraise concerning the effect of radio frequencies in the central nervous system. Indeed, European and national studies were performed and were the subject of publications and congress communications.
